I thought I share some tips for Solo Travelers:

1. Choose your destination carefully. Are you familiar with the laws, customs and culture of your chosen destination? This can be especially important for female travelers – be prepared to adapt, blend in and dress appropriately. This can also be especially important for LGBTQ+ travelers. Consult iglta.org for resources & local networks.

2. Choose your accommodation carefully. Research the area where you are staying. Is the hotel/hostel/apartment in a lively or quiet neighbourhood? Each has its own pros and cons. Avoid ground floor rooms but do try to stay near an elevator, not stairwells. Don’t tell people you meet where you are staying. Keep your room key safe.

3. Pack lightly, avoid heavy bags. Best to stay nimble when on your own so you can easily manage all of your belongings as you move from place to place. Have at least one hand free while carrying bags. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or items. Use luggage tags that cover your details.

4. Arrive during the day. Traveling in daylight gives you a better chance to see the neighbourhood and get to know your surrounding area and you can also take note of landmarks and avoid danger. When you are touring (alone) during the day, best to tell the front desk, leave a note in your room or text someone back home.

5. Keep your documents safe.. Keep your passport, cash, etc. in the hotel safe and keep a copy of it with you or hidden in your suitcase. Use a money belt. Leave a copy with family/friends back home and/or email it to yourself at an address you can access anywhere.

6. Be aware. Be aware of your surrounding just like you would at home, stay alert and stay sober. Be aware of those trying to help with your luggage, offer you a ride. Travel in government approved transportation. Avoid any isolated situations where you are the only person in the train car, etc. Try to find out what the typical tourist scams are. Never hitchhike!

7. Meet people in a safe way. Book some group activities/tours to meet other people. Tap into many of the online/social media forums where you can meet other solo travelers.Try international associations such as Rotary or alumni groups.

8. Eating alone. If you are on a tour, sign up for themed dinners or attend the welcome dinner to meet other group members. If you are traveling by yourself, especially in Europe, you easily meet people in a Biergarten or a pub (it is also still common practice in restaurants to seat people together if a table is not fully occupied
